In order to accept credit card information on your own site you have to have data encryption provide by an SSL (secure Sockets Layer) certificate. A page protected by SSL will display a 'lock' icon on your browser plus the address will start with HTTPS rather than the standard HTTP.

The SSL goes together with your Merchant Account to enable you to do customized ecommerce on your own site without any third party such as PayPal.
